******Carrie Becker The Growing Brain: The Power of Quiet (AM or PM Session) ****** Did you know that the brain processes auditory input faster than visual input? When we have the space to truly listen, without an abundance of background noise, our brains prioritize what we tune in to and reward paying attention through dopamine release. When the level of auditory input is out of our control, the sounds we hear become noise that distracts the brain, and we lose focus. During this workshop session, we will learn how to create the optimal learning environment that supports brain development. No Bad Kids: The Brain and Behavior Connection One of my favorite quotes by Janet Lansbury is, “In my world, there are no bad kids, just impressionable, conflicted young people wrestling with emotions and impulses, trying to communicate their feelings and needs the only way they know how.” This workshop will focus on the connection between the growing brain and typical child behaviors that challenge us. ******Brenda Metzler Practicing Professionalism in Early Childhood Education (PM Session) ****** Training Objectives 1. Using prompts, participants will reflect on their own professional practice 2. Together participants will explore components of professionalism in practice 3. Participants will refer to the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct for guidance on Professionalism with specific attention to responsibilities to children and families 4. Participants will explore the VELS and the NAEYC DAP materials as resources to support professional practice 5. Participants will discuss possible professional responses to actual situations they have encountered ******Conversations with Families on Challenging Topics (AM Session) ****** Training Objectives 1. Responding to prompts, participants will explore what makes a topic “challenging” for them 2. Participants will consider the role of family in the life of young children 3. Participants will identify their individual default style of communication and determine ways to translate their personal strengths into responsive communication practices 4. Participants will practice responsive (rather than reactive) communication 5. Participants will refer to the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct for guidance on professional standards for communication with families 6.
