Holistic Education: Foundations in Ellen Tadd’s Framework for Wise Education Deb Norris

Special Topics:
Sponsor: Creative Lives
Instructor: Maureen Burford, M.Ed.

Join Creative Lives Director Maureen Burford to explore a unique, effective approach to reaching and teaching the whole child -- author Ellen Tadd's "Framework for Wise Education," based on Tadd's understanding of the human energy system, or chakra system, and its role in human development. The premise of Tadd's Framework is simple: good function across the chakra system equates to optimal learning and wellbeing for all individuals. In this course, we will examine each of seven Framework categories of development -- as they relate to health of mind, body, inner life, and relationships; we will apply our discoveries to enhance our current approaches and achieve desired outcomes for students. The course includes experiential practice with specific tools and strategies that address: Inspired learning and inner happiness The mechanics of focus and concentration The building blocks of self-esteem and confidence What it means to want the best for others Emotional wellbeing Cognitive and character development Positive relationships Developing responsibility and discipline Strategies for improving your partnership with parents and colleagues For Pre-K through 3rd-grade educators Intended Outcomes: Students will gain an understanding of the chakra system and its function and influence in human development. They will actively practice skills that enhance their work with children, colleagues, and parents, and will apply these same skills, in age-appropriate ways, to support children's development in each of the seven Framework categories. In addition, students will gain practice addressing common challenges in children such as struggles with focus and self-esteem, anxiety, bullying, shyness, impulsive behavior, and emotional overwhelm. “I have taken many courses and participated in many professional development experiences (individual and year-long). This particular course has been perhaps the most fulfilling of them all - teaching me so much about myself, while simultaneously enabling me to better support those around me to realize their potential in the classroom and outside of it. Theoretical and practical, this course has helped me be more intentional and reflective in my parenting, in my work in education, and in all other aspects of my life.” —K. Mannix, educator
