Making Our Mark! Deb Norris

Special Topics:
Sponsor: Transforming Early Childhood Education LLC
Instructor: Carrie Becker

Workshop Topic Description: From birth to 3 years early mark making is not the same as writing. Children of this age do not understand that forming marks communicates meaning. Instead, it’s a sensory and physical experience. The ability to handle and control a pencil is still a physical development rather than communication at this stage. To control fine muscles, young children need to develop larger muscles in their bodies. We will explore early mark-making during this workshop. During this workshop participants will: - Learn the difference between mark making (which includes scribbling) and writing. - Explore a variety of sensory and physical ways to make marks. - Develop an understanding of the importance of mark making from birth- age 3. - Discuss ways to provide education to families in their program on the importance of this stage of development.

Additional Information

PLEASE READ BEFORE PURCHASING TICKETS: The workshop is designed for participants to form a sense of community. This can only happen when attendees are open to sharing their experiences, reflections, and ideas. Many organizations provide professional development for early childhood educators. Suppose you are seeking professional development only to obtain a certificate for credit hours. In that case, this workshop may not be the right fit. Workshop attendees are asked to be active participants throughout the entire session. This involves having your camera on for at least part of the session, taking an active role in small group conversations, and being fully present during the entire session. Please note: Ticket purchases are non-refundable. There are NO refunds, credits or exchanges. Participants will need an understanding of how to navigate Zoom- using their camera, microphone, chat tool and joining breakout rooms. All virtual workshops are taught in a live format in the Eastern Time Zone (EDT). They will not be recorded. Each person participating (viewing) the workshop needs to purchase a ticket. The ticket fee gives the participant access to the information provided during the session by the workshop facilitator. The payment only entitles the purchaser to a certificate if they attend and fully participate in the session. Prior to the workshop session you will receive information on how to request and earn a professional development certificate.
