Reading for Kindergarten! Helping Children Build Phonological Awareness Brendan Rooney

Sponsor: Stern Center for Language and Learning
Instructor: Kendra Padilla

Do you want to help provide a strong start for children as they embark on their journey into the world of reading and writing? This interactive workshop will focus on building phonological awareness, or the essential skills that help students understand the sounds in oral language that will help build a strong foundation for later reading and writing success.

Participants will gain a clear understanding of what phonological awareness is, why it matters, and how it supports reading proficiency. You’ll learn practical strategies, playful activities, and fun, easy-to-use games that help children recognize and manipulate sounds, syllables, rhymes, and beginning sounds.

Whether you’re working with children at home or in a classroom, this workshop will help you feel able and inspired to support the early literacy development of children in joyful and effective ways.

Perfect for anyone who works with preschool-age children or rising kindergartners!
