Supporting Young Children’s Sensorimotor Development Through Play and Movement Deb Norris

Sponsor: Vermont Association for the Education of Young Children (VTAEYC)
Instructor: Taryn Levy, Physical Therapist & Bailee Layn-Gordon, Occupational Therapist

This training explores typical sensorimotor development in young children and how modern environments can impact sensory, gross motor, and fine motor skills. We’ll discuss how these changes affect regulation, postural control, and classroom participation. Participants will learn developmentally appropriate play and movement strategies to support seated learning, as well as the importance of the dignity of risk in gross motor play. Practical ideas for adding more movement into the preschool day will also be shared to promote engagement, independence, and overall development.
