Special Topics: Advanced Specialized Care ,
Sponsor: Caledonia and Southern Essex Starting Points Network
Instructor: Lauren Smith

In order to successfully serve the children and families in your program, your staff will need a clear understanding of every facet of screening, including its purposes and limitations, effective and sensitive communication with families, cultural and other factors that may influence a child’s screening results, and community resources for appropriate referral. Learn about Vermont’s system for nurturing every child’s developmental path and how it can support and enhance your work to strengthen families. This training provides an introduction to best practices around developmental monitoring and screening, an overview of administration methods of the Ages and Stages Questionnaire 3rd edition & Ages and Stages Questionnaire: Social-Emotional 2nd edition, and an orientation to the Developmental Screening Registry. Participants will be looking at a child's development from one month to five and a half years old. This look at a child's development will be done using the ASQ 3rd edition questionnaire. Questionnaires look at the following areas of development: communication, fine and gross motor, problem-solving skills, and personal-social skills. Participants will develop an understanding of the ASQ-Social and Emotional 2nd edition. They will learn how it can be used in conjunction with the ASQ-3 to help guide the development of the children in their care. Participants will also learn how these assessments can be used to determine if a child may need further referral considerations. Participants will discuss the importance and advantage of screening children and recording the results on the Vermont Developmental Screening Registry. Participants will receive an orientation of the on-line developmental screening registry.
