Our human emotions are powerful; they act like primitive instincts to help us stay safe, learn, bond, and mature. Yet emotions need our conscious awareness and regulation or they run the show (and not always for our best). Just as we support children's intellectual and physical development, we have a vital support role in children's emotional development over time, and today while they are still emotionally immature. This is part one of a three part series that teaches the stages of emotional development and ways to support the five interactions with emotions: expressing, naming, feeling, mixing, and regulating. Objectives: Participants will be able to: 1) Explain the basic science of how emotions work and the stages of emotional development. 2) Support children in expressing and naming their emotions. These are the vital foundations for emotional regulation to grow.
