Using the FCCERS-R to Unpack Quality in Family Child Care Homes July 6, 2020
This training provides an introduction to the Family Child Care Environmental Rating Scale – Revised Edition (FCCERS-R), one observational tool STARS Assessors use for consultation and assessment. By walking through some of the scale’s key terms and topics, participants will learn how the FCCERS-R considers quality in a program designed to meet the needs of children of various ages and abilities. Come see examples of high-scoring interactions, conversations, activities, space and furnishings, schedules, and personal care routines; then, celebrate your successes and set a few of your own goals for quality improvement. Objectives: 1. Participants will define the FCCERS-R terms, “accessible,” “much of the day,” “appropriate,” “infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school-agers,” and “supervision.” 2. Participants will identify 5 wise FCCERS-R choices: materials or activities that simultaneously address more than one FCCERS-R indicator. 3. Considering feasibility and fit with their own professional philosophy, participants will write two program quality improvement goals for their programs.
