Early Education and Democracy: Lessons from Sweden October 15, 2018
Harold Gothson, an early childhood education leader and innovator from Sweden, will share his experience and insights from building networks of high-quality early care and education programs. Rooted in the Reggio Emilia model, Gothson will delve into his conviction that skilled early educators have an essential role to play in creating democratically-minded citizens and communities. Gothson will also share how the Swedish early education system is structured and funded as well as how creating cooperatives among early childhood programs has been a key to its ability to educate its youngest citizens. Short bio: Harold Göthson is the founder of the Reggio Emilio Institute in Stockholm, Sweden and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the research foundation Reggio Children Centre Loris Malaguzzi. Through 40 years of leadership in Sweden’s early education programs, Gothson influenced the education, professional development, leadership and practice of early childhood educators in multiple settings. Today, he is a consultant and lecturer to early education and elementary education programs and systems in Africa, Europe, the United States, and South America, motivated by his belief that how we educate our young children can lead to renewed democratic, ecological, and transcultural citizenship.

This training, co-sponsored by UVM College of Education, VB5 and Lets Grow Kids, will be held at UVM's Memorial Lounge in Waterman, South Prospect Street, Burlington. Enter main entrance of Waterman building,1st floor, proceed straight ahead. Light refreshments will be available. Waterman Parking, the visitor lot across the street and most parking lots are free to the public after 5:30.
