How to Talk To kids February 18, 2020
Staff will work through a series of activities focusing on raising their awareness of how they interact with kids. Initially we will explore how our emotions play into those interactions and if we can shift them to have more positive outcomes. Next will be an activity where staff are providing directions to other staff. The goal will be to debrief more and less effective ways to give directions. Specifically, staff will explore building engagement by making times when directions are given intentional; helping kids understand the why. We will split into older and younger kid groups and process “Why we think kids should listen?”. The third activity is focused on responding to a conflict with a student and what the benefits of different responses may be. With all that being framed, groups will split into site specific time where they can focus on their individual areas of growth in how to best talk and engage with students. Sites will leave with 2 action items to implement. There will also be a check-in time on prior goals.
