Intentional Language: Understanding the Words We Use With Children December 10, 2021
The true meaning of what you are saying to children comes across in many ways. Children have an authenticity meter that registers genuineness. If your statements aren't honest, children will quickly sense it. I have seen an adult talking calmly to a child about hitting his friends. At the same time, I noticed the child struggling to back away from the adult's wrist grip. Was the message to the child, "I am here to help you learn how to keep your friends safe," or "You had better listen to me. Right now I am being gentle, but I have a short fuse and a strong grip"?
