Sponsor: Vermont Higher Education Collaborative
Instructor: Laura Bonazinga Bouyea, MS, CCC-SLP,

Social communication, or the exchange of information between individuals, is an imperative part of social emotional well-being. Through play we can create opportunities for children's developing minds, language, and the capacity for negotiating social exchanges. This workshop series, with graduate course option, focuses on the development for all learners of pivotal life, educational, and social skills, which are nurtured most effectively within the context of play. Workshop 2: March 4, 2022 - The Social Tango: Early Development of Theory of Mind and Social Relatedness Effective communication allows all partners to exchange ideas and experiences while our emotional state changes, and relies heavily on several pivotal developmental skills for attending, connecting, and communicating. This workshop focuses on linguistic milestones that support social relatedness and communication. Participants will: Explore individual sources of neurodivergence across all communication modalities Define theory of mind and its connection to language, play, and communication Develop and simulate strategies to increase joint attention, mutual engagement, and early perspective-taking Develop goals, plans, and methods for monitoring progress in effective communication and social negotiation Develop supports and curricular components for integrating theory of mind, social communication and collaborative problem solving This offering is part of the Neurodiversity and Inclusion program and as such, will include a focus on supporting neuro-divergent learners as well as neurotypical learners.
