Nature-Based Connection Through the Senses: Supporting Learning, Development & Well-Being in Early Childhood September 11, 2026
This professional development experience explores how intentional sensory engagement with nature enhances learning for children (and adults). Children are born learners and their brains are shaped through sensory experiences. Research shows that creating a connection with natural environments through their senses supports cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development.
When children don't get these nature-based sensory experiences, children may exhibit an increase in anxiety, a decrease in executive functioning skills, and adverse physical health concerns. Richard Louv coined this outcome as Nature-Deficit Disorder.
This PD is designed to support educators in creating and implementing nature-based sensory experiences/environments that meet all children and can be used outside in nature or brought into the classroom. This PD will go beyond the 5 typically talked about senses and dive into senses such as proprioception, interoception and balance.
