Nature Play and Learning: Risky Play and the Adult Role July 16, 2021
Children develop curiosity, wonder, a sense of place, and an appreciation for the earth when they play in nature and with nature. In their nature-based play, children encounter natural phenomena, ask meaningful questions, work collaboratively, solve problems, communicate, and practice science and engineering skills. This session will focus on risky play, including its benefits and strategies for allowing children to safely experience developmentally appropriate challenges during outdoor play. We will discuss the role of an adult in nature play, and share activities that early childhood educators can use to prepare a group of students to safely experience time outside.
