Never Too Early: Social and Emotional Development Through Children’s Literature Deb Norris

Sponsor: Vermont Humanities
Instructor: Leanne Porter

This NEW Never Too Early course offers early childhood educators a comprehensive understanding of how children’s literature can meaningfully support social and emotional development in the early years. Participants will begin with an introduction to emotional intelligence and how young children recognize, express, and regulate feelings.

Through guided exploration of children’s books, educators will examine multiple types of social- and emotional-themed literature, including stories that promote empathy, cooperation, self-awareness, and problem-solving.

Participants will also engage with core concepts related to developmental trauma, including its impacts on young children and the role of supportive interventions.

A section on sensory development will deepen understanding of how various types of sensory input can influence behavior and self-regulation. Participants will learn sensory-based interventions and practical strategies to support regulation for both children and adults.

By the end of this free course, educators will have a rich toolkit of research, literature choices, trauma-informed practices, sensory strategies, and communication skills to help foster resilient, emotionally healthy learning environments for young children. Prior to the first session, we will invite participants to join the Google Classroom and begin participation in online discussions. Active participation in the classroom is a requirement of this class. You will receive a set of books and six credit hours from Northern Lights.
