Registering for Fundamentals? Start here!
To register for Fundamentals, please follow the guide below. The registration process takes 5-10 minutes, and can be done on either a phone or computer. There is a $50 registration fee which is due at the time of registration.
After you have read the guide below, please visit the Special Topics Training Application to begin the registration process.
Special Topics Trainings Overview
Northern Lights offers several trainings which utilize an online learning platform, known as “Canvas”. These trainings are:
- Fundamentals for Early Childhood Professionals
- Voices of Learning
- Community of Practice Facilitation Training
To register for these trainings, you will need to complete the following steps:
- Create a Northern Lights Account
- Complete the Special Topics Trainings Application
- Register for your desired training
The instructions below will walk you through how to complete each of these steps, using Fundamentals for Early Childhood Professionals as an example – the process is the same for all Special Topics Trainings.
Please Note: you are only permitted to register yourself for a training with your Northern Lights Account – it is not possible to register other people for trainings using your Northern Lights account. Payment is due at the time of registration.

Step 1: Creating a Northern Lights Account

To register for a special topics training, you must first create a Northern Lights account. Let’s get started by going to the sign-in page for the Northern Lights portal, which can be found at: https://go.northernlightsccv.org/portal/start
- Click the text that says “Create a New Account”, below “First-Time Users”. This will take you to the account creation page.
- Enter your preferred Email Address, legal First and Last Name, and Birthdate. This information is primarily used for verification purposes – if you have a preferred name that differs from your legal name, you will have the option to note that when you register for trainings. Click “Continue” to submit this information and continue to the next step.
- A Temporary PIN will be sent to the email address that you entered in Step 3 – check your email (including spam/trash folders), and enter the PIN into the box titled “Temporary PIN”. Input the birthdate that you entered in Step 3, and click “Login”.
- Create a new password for your Northern Lights Account. Once you have created a password that meets the criteria listed, enter it into the “New Password” and “New Password (again)” boxes, then click “Set Password”.
- Congratulations! You have created your Northern Lights account.
Step 2: Completing the Special Topics Trainings Application

Accessing the Special Topics Trainings Application
- Go to the Special Topics Training Application page, and log in to your account.
- Click “Create Application” to begin the Special Topics application. Please Note: when you create your application, you will receive an automated email from Northern Lights titled “CCV Application for Admission Created”. This is confirming that you have started the application; you will receive a separate email upon completion of the application.
Completing the Special Topics Trainings Application
To complete the Special Topics Trainings application, please follow the instructions on the application page. If you have already completed the “Northern Lights Training Application” then the information on file will be pulled into this application.
The application is split into several sections which contain required and optional questions. The required questions have a “*” next to them, and these questions must be completed before you submit the application.
Once you have completed a section, click “Continue” to access the next section.
When you reach the “Electronic Signature” section of the application, enter your full legal name, then click “Confirm”. If there are any required fields which have not been completed, you will see these listed in red text on the “Review” section. If there are no required fields left to complete and you are satisfied with your application, click “Submit Application”.
When you have submitted the application, you will receive an email titled “Northern Lights Application Submitted”, and you will be taken to the application status page.
Step 3: Registering for a Special Topics Training

- Visit the application status page.
- If there are any further actions required on your part before you are able to register, these will be listed on this page. otherwise, you can click “Register for a Special Topics Training (including Fundamentals)” to be taken to the registration page.
- Please note: if you have not yet applied for a Special Topics Training, the status next to this link will be set to “Awaiting”, and you will see a red “X”. Once you have registered for your training, the status will change from “Awaiting” to “Received”, and the red “X” will be replaced by a green checkmark. It may take up to 20 minutes for this change to appear on your status page.
- Click the “Fundamentals for Early Childhood Professionals” link to view upcoming trainings.
- Select your desired training to open its registration form. Fill in the required fields and use the payment widget to pay the registration fee for the training. Payment is due at the time of registration.
- Click “Submit” to finalize your registration. You will receive an email confirming your registration, and providing additional information on next steps.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my application has been submitted?
When you have submitted the application, you will receive an email titled “Northern Lights Application Submitted”, and you will be taken to the application status page.
I’ve submitted my application, but I can’t figure out how to register.
You will be automatically brought to the application status page after you have completed the Special Topics Trainings application. Please click the link above to be taken to the status page, where you can register for your desired training.
Please Note: if you are using Google Chrome to register, you may need to clear your cache to access the registration page.
On the application status page, there is a red “X” next to the registration link – can I still register?
Yes, you can register by clicking the link which says “Register for a Special Topics Training (including Fundamentals)”.
If you have not yet applied for a Special Topics Training, the status next to this link will be set to “Awaiting”, and you will see a red “X”. Once you have registered for your training, the status will change from “Awaiting” to “Received”, and the red “X” will be replaced by a green checkmark. It may take up to 20 minutes for this change to appear on your status page.
I’ve received a message saying that my Special Topics Training application was withdrawn – what does this mean?
If you are an active VSC or CCV student, you might receive a message that your Special Topics Training application was withdrawn – this email just indicates that you are already an active student in the VSC/CCV system; you will still be able to apply for a Special Topics training using the steps outlined above.
My employer wants to pay for my Fundamentals registration fee – how can they do this?
